The short film “The Truth of Samantha Smith” from the Russian director Andrei Sobolev was presented in 2015, at the VGIK festival. The picture of the talented young director, shot in the genre of historical drama, is based on real events, and tells us about the difficult story of the American girl Samantha Smith, who writes a letter to the head of the USSR Andropov. Events unfold in the 80s of the last century, and in those days when a child from America writes a letter to the head of the USSR, between the countries there is a cold war. Little Samantha tries to end this destructive relationship with her letter, calling for peace and harmony.
This position of a twelve-year-old child cannot go unnoticed, and a year later the leadership of the Union responded to the girl, she was invited on a friendly visit to the country. Samantha Smith travels to an alien, completely unfamiliar state, about which there are many rumors, as if about a strange and hostile planet. What will she see here? The girl will visit a variety of Soviet cities, visit Artek, meet new friends, solve difficult tasks that confront her during the trip. Despite the fact that the film is quite easy and positive, the story of the main character ends tragically - after traveling to the USSR, she dies in a plane crash.
The film is based on some facts from the life of Samantha Smith, of course, the real picture is somewhat embellished by the director, skipped through the prism of his own worldview, but, nevertheless, the situation is conveyed quite accurately - both from the point of view of the audience and according to critics.
The girl became the world’s first “children’s” diplomat, and in many ways contributed to the destruction of the Iron Curtain and the normalization of relations between the countries. History repeats itself, and therefore the picture of Andrei Sobolev acquires a new relevance, becomes topical. Deciding to watch a movie about the fate of an unusual girl, you will be able to discover new pages of history, see politics and interethnic relations from a different, not quite usual angle.
The death of the girl, which is also shown in this film, many called at one time the work of the CIA, attributing political notes to the tragedy. Nevertheless, this story is warm and kind, despite the tragedy of the situation, there is a place for humor and serious reflection, there are happy moments and bitter notes. close
