The documentary Perfumer (44500 Max, The Perfumer) by Finnish director and screenwriter Jari Kokko tells the story of Max Perttula, a simple rural youth who dreamed of creating his own exclusive perfumes.
Max Perttula, for as long as he can remember, has always lived with a dream of his cosmetics business. While his peers were playing football, seven-year-old Max created his first cream. He spent hours in the library studying the ingredients of cosmetics and fragrances. In 2005, at the age of 32, Max finally started his own business, which, however, two years later, almost led to his financial collapse. Despite all the difficulties, the hero of the film “Perfume” continued to fight for his dream, facing then with little success, then with complete despair, and eventually reaching international fame. close

In 1984—before cell phones, the web, and reality TV, a young director set out to document a year in the life of a typical California high school. The result was “All American High”, an unusually honest and humorous look at 80’s teen life. Told through the eyes of a visiting foreign exchange student, the film presents an uncensored view of senior year in the era of big hair, punks and parachute pants. Thirty years after they lived it, some of the film’s original subjects return in new interviews, revisiting one of the most memorable chapters in their lives. close

Garden Lovers is a documentary love story about Finnish couples who have a passion for gardening. The film with comic undertones looks at their stories behind the hedges. The garden provides a framework for tales of relationship conflicts and joys; it depicts the many ways in which life can flourish; it gives strength and unites, but it also becomes a meeting place for farewells. There is an invisible bond that grows between the couples in the film; they comment and comfort each other with their own stories. close

In 'Wretches & Jabberers and Stories from the Road', two men with autism embark on a global quest to change prevailing attitudes about disability and intelligence. With limited speech, Tracy Thresher, 42, and Larry Bissonnette, 52, both faced lives of mute isolation in mental institutions or adult disability centers. When they learned as adults to communicate by typing, their lives changed dramatically. Their world tour message is that the same possibility exists for others like themselves. At each stop, they dissect public attitudes about autism and issue a hopeful challenge to reconsider competency and the future. Along the way, they reunite with old friends from the USA, expand the isolated world of a talented young painter and make new allies in their cause. close

In the heart of the Balkans, where making music is an integral part of life, meet Pera, a wonderful old farmer who seems to know everything about everything; Josip, inventor of numerous new instruments; and the amazing Vera, greatest leaf virtuoso of them all. Three musicians – a glimpse into the unknown, all– but – lost art of leaf playing. Filled with stunning music as vital yet as fragile as the perishable instrument on which it's played, this lovely film is as much about joy, living in the moment, being alive, as it is about making music. Seeing it, you may just want to go find some leaves – and make some music yourself. - Charlie Cockey close
