Mengejar Matahari is a coming of age tale of four childhood friends in a Jakarta ghetto whose bonds are tested as they grow into adulthood. They share a nightly ritual, "chasing the sun" (mengejar matahari), where they race through the ghetto, symbolically chasing their future. Their friendship becomes strained when Ardi and Damar fall in love with Apin's niece, Rara, just as a neighborhood bully is released from jail and seeks revenge. The film is both about the strength of friendship and a metaphor for the durability of the Indonesian archipelago. close

Ca Bau Kan relates the saga of Giok Lan, an Indonesian woman living in the Netherlands, who returns to Indonesia in search of her roots. Her mother, Tinung, a village woman, was known as ‘Ca Bau Kan’ – a word used to describe a courtesan who entertained Chinese men in colonial Indonesia. Giok Lan’s father, Tan Peng Liang (Ferry Salim), was an immigrant Chinese merchant who had a very successful tobacco business in Batavia. She becomes deeply involved with him, and causes a scandal when he has Tinung move in with his family. The film is set between 1930 and 1950, and unfolds the story of Giok Lan and her parents: Tinung and Tan Peng Liang where Tan is eventually ruined when his rivals begin to attack him. This is owing to the significant contrast in socio-economic and cultural background, as the love of these last two characters face a series of difficulties. close

The film weaves around four stories all happening in metropolitan, dehumanizing Jakarta. In fact that is what it is about, the quality of meaninglessness of living in a place that turns people into zombies. In a place where meaning must be invented, these kids turn into the only place, the only culture they see worth tuning into: television and movies. Thus they slowly degenerate into the abysmal reinterpretation in a sort of sickening anti-hero, anti-social statements that goes absurdly a wrong turn. close

Regi suffers from depression since childhood, being raised by wealthy parents who have little time for her, but plenty to fight with and cheat on each other. While in college she meets and becomes close to Rajib, a drug dealer. Developing an intense hatred for men, inspired by her violent and insensitive father, she identifies as a lesbian. Her introduction to the drug-scene engulfs her and she develops a cocaine habit which rapidly accelerates into a preference for White China heroin. She meets and falls in love with Rajibs ex drug-dealing partner, Vela, who has already become a hardcore junkie. Her and Vela's downward spiral into chronic addiction is portrayed powerfully throughout the film as is their intense attachment to each other. The plot (based on a true story) is exceptional in its depiction of the drug problems in Indonesia, the often terrible 'solutions' to these problems, and the reasons behind why they occur. close
