The homunculus is an artificial creature. Grown in a retort by the famous scientist Professor Hansen and his assistant Rodin, he turns into a man of rare intelligence and unbending will. However, after learning the secret of his origin, he feels like an outcast and yearns for love to get rid of the fatal loneliness.
An irresistible desire for love drives him to distant countries, where no one knows the secret of his birth, but the truth comes out, and no matter how much the Homunculus tries to persuade human hearts to friendship, people recoil from him in horror, shouting: "This is a Homunculus, a man without a soul, a servant of the devil, a monster!" When they kill his dog, the inconsolable Homunculus is imbued with such contempt for humanity that even the only friend of the Motherland is unable to convince him. close
