When the band starts playing gigs, their sound is largely inconsistent and incoherent, however, over time, the band becomes increasingly competent in their musicianship. La Scala went all out for its 1986 production of this grandest of grand operas, with a strong cast and, most important for a video recording, a larger-than-life staging. The Triumph Scene in Act II is by no means Aida's only attraction, but it is the part that makes the strongest and most lasting impression and it is the visual and musical climax of this production. Stage director Luca Ronconi brings on a procession to dwarf all processions: looted treasures, heroic statuary, miserable captives struggling under the lash of whip-bearing slave drivers. On par with these visuals is Lorin Maazel's first-class performance of the popular Grand March with the outstanding La Scala chorus and orchestra. In Act III, the contrasting tranquility of the Nile Scene also gets a visual treatment to match the music's qualities. close

In 1953, the first film-opera by Leoncavallo Pajaci was filmed on Italian television, with the participation of the owner of the legendary voice of the Golden Age of Belcanto - Franco Corelli. Tonio was sung by the unsurpassed Tito Gobby. The plot is based on a true incident that Leoncavallo witnessed in early childhood: a jealous actor of a wandering troupe killed an unfaithful wife and her lover during a performance!
Many years before the day of the television premiere, in 1892, the premiere of this imperishable work took place at the Dal Verme Theatre in Milan. The production was directed by A. Toscanini himself. Opera Leoncavalpo lightning quickly broke the indifference and dislike of musicologists to the author. The success of the work was huge: less than a year later, Pajatsy appeared immediately on all stages of Europe. close

Live from ROH 1985. Giordano's Andrea Chenier is one of the greatest of verismo operas, full of heart-stopping big tunes and powerful emotional situations. If it is not as well-known as it should be, it is because in summary it sounds a little too like Puccini's Tosca: there is a tussle between political opponents over a woman, an attempt to save a condemned man, a tenor aria about writing poetry on the eve of execution. The difference is that Gerard (Giorgio Zancanaro) is not a villain like Scarpia, he is an idealist whom the French Revolution has betrayed as much as it has his rival the poet Chenier (Placido Domingo). His temptation to abuse his power to seduce the virtuous Maddalena (Anna Tomowa-Sintow) is a momentary one, though its consequences are terrible. There is a streak of post-Wagnerian decadence in much of this--Maddalena is at least as much in love with death as she is with Chenier, and the final love duet has a deeply sinister aspect. -- From Amazon.co.uk close
