A silent short film by Segundo de Chaumont. It premiered in France on October 31, 1908.
A couple arrives at a hotel where only one person works. The building is fully automated: the suitcases carry themselves, the comb combs the heroine, the razor shaves the hero herself. In order to achieve this effect, Chaumont used not magic, but the method of frame-by-frame shooting. The object is removed while the handle of the camera produces a quarter of a revolution, then it is slightly moved, removed by another quarter of a revolution and repeat the operation the desired number of times. When viewed at normal speed, the crest appears to be moving on its own. close

Émile Cohl mixes live-action and stop-motion animation in this charming evocation of the power of imagination. A magician shapes his cane into a hoop with strange properties for a young girl. Costume changes and city promenades give way towards greater abstraction as the film becomes absorbed by what goes on inside the ring. close

A scientist has acquired a microscope and is showing it off to his friend. He takes various body samples - hair, phlegm, etc. - and puts them under the microscope. The "microbes" coalesce and form different shapes, creating caricatures of various people, such as mothers-in-law and drunks. These animated characters goof around in traditional cartoon fashion. close

Although not the first feature-length animated film, as is sometimes thought, it was the first cartoon to feature a character with an appealing personality. The appearance of a true character distinguished it from earlier animated "trick films", such as those of Blackton and Cohl, and makes it the predecessor to later popular cartoons such as those by Walt Disney. The film was also the first to be created using keyframe animation. close

A tilted figure, consisting largely of right angles at the beginning, grows by accretion, with the addition of short straight lines and curves which sprout from the existing design. The figure vanishes and the process begins again with a new pattern, each cycle lasting one or two seconds. The complete figures are drawn in a vaguely Art Deco style and could be said to resemble any number of things, an ear, a harp, panpipes, a grand piano with trombones, and so on, only highly stylized. The tone is playful and hypnotic. close
