A very grim and hopeless picture.
The world has fallen, humanity is almost extinct. There are rumors that the final blow put a great flood. Although what are these rumors and who spreads them is a big question, because there are 2 full-fledged characters.
The film tells the story of a little girl whose raison d’etre is the protection of a mysterious egg, which she constantly protects and does not lose sight of. In her solo walks through the dead world, she meets a knight whose goals and motives seem not particularly clear.
On the outskirts of the dead world, a ship-city sometimes emerges from the sea abyss, it is cold and inexorable, and its decks are filled with statues. They become those who have lost all hope in this almost dead world.
Remark in the film is small, but small details around a lot. Mamoru Oshii (who then in 2001 will shoot Avalon – the Polish-Japanese Matrix with a much more juicy overtones) decided to play with the concepts of hope and hopelessness with this film. To give him credit, it was wonderful.
One of the most hopeless atmospheres in cinema I have ever faced.
