The British film directed by Robert Hamer, The Scapegoat, 1959, made my list for viewing thanks to the name of the director, who at one time I really liked the film Kind Hearts and Coronets, 1949, as well as the name of the lead actor Alec Guinness. It turned out that this is the first adaptation of the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, given the author, you could immediately assume in what genre the film will be, however, who read the book, say that the film and the book are quite different from each other, but this is an ordinary story. At the heart of the plot from the series “an amazing story like a fairy tale” is the story of a French teacher from the British University John Barrett (Alec Guinness), who comes to France, disappointed in life, and suggests starting a new life. Immediately, he is offered a completely incredible opportunity for this - he encounters a man like two drops of water similar to him - Jacques de Gay. That too in life is not the best period, word for word, Jacques offers a drink, John gets drunk and goes with him to the hotel, where in the morning wakes up alone, next to the table is the passport of this Jacques, and near the bed are suitcases with his belongings. Soon, a driver knocks on the door after him. At first, John naively tries to prove to everyone that he is not who he is taken for, but no one believes him, not even Jacques' mother, the only creature who recognizes this is Jacques' dog, who barked a stranger. Realizing that it is useless to resist, he slowly begins to enter this life and realizes that he likes it, that this is what he lacked in life - family, business, etc. However, the relationship with the hypothetical wife is not very, much better he finds language with the mistress of Jacques, to whom he tells his story, and she believes him. Then there are even tragic events, but the end for John is absolutely good, although he had to commit a crime, I even wanted to find a book and see how it developed and what ended there, but for now laziness. In principle, the film is not bad for its time and for its genre.
