American writer Gore Vidal was born in 1925 in West Point, the son of a military academy teacher. As a child and adolescence, he lived in Washington, D.C., in the home of his grandfather, a blind senator from Oklahoma, and read political texts to him. During the Second World War he served in the Navy, his impressions were described in the first novel Willivo (1946). Since then, he has become a professional writer, successfully performing in various genres.

Gore Vidal is today the largest essayist in American literature. His essays and interviews brought him fame as an American Nostradamus.
