30 years, USA, Great Depression. To New York is approaching the train “Flying legs”, on Board which strange people started bloody showdowns. Immortal gangsters walk along the streets of the city, and a young girl is looking for her bad brother, who has something firmly infused the mafia. All this is extremely confusing and falls on the viewer suddenly - because the story begins to show us exactly from the middle, gradually supplementing it with elements from the beginning and end.
“Men in white”, “men in black”, immortals, terrorists, adventurers, mafia, maniacs, monsters – all this whirlwind is not easy to understand. What's up, she's shocked by an overdose of information. Therefore, the first few episodes were very difficult to watch - there was no explanation for what was happening on the screen, more and more facts were reported, and logic still eluded. However, I must warn you right away - the one who has watched to the end will be rewarded, and will understand a lot, although, unfortunately, not all. I, in any case, did not understand everything - apparently, the creators of this anime forgot about some of the Chekhov guns. Who is the boy with the tattoo and the girl with the scars? What did they forget on the train and why are they fighting the Rousseau gang and the sectarians? Maybe I missed something...
In the style of Baccano! is closest to the films of Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. Especially to the “Pulp Fiction” of the first – the scheme of presentation of the plot here is about the same. But in the volume of the series carries the brain stronger than the full-length.
What this anime boasts are colorful characters. Noble gangsters Firo and Maizah, terrorist bombers Jacuzzi and Nuys, frostbitten psychopathic killer Ladd Russo, Gandor brothers, Black Railroader ... and many others. And, of course, a couple of adventurers, Isaac and Miria are not the most important, but the most positive and memorable characters of the series. Despite the fact that these characters are not just many, but VERY many, the creators of Baccano! managed to reveal everyone, show his individuality, character. And it seems that the authors of the anime are proud of their collection of heroes: in the screensaver of each series, the viewer is presented to each of the main ones - and there are more than a dozen of them, in the credits you can see almost all the characters - several dozen.
The spoonful of tar in this series becomes his own, paradoxically, the main feature - the number of heroes and the brain-throwing composition. Imagine Pulp Fiction, stretched over 13 episodes. What is fun in the format of a two-hour film is a real test for nerves and memory in the format of the series. Not to mention the fact that the entanglement of Tarantino’s chronology is far from the Japanese. So either watch the full 312 minutes or exercise patience and memory. “The threshold of entry” in Baccano! is not just high – to watch this anime, you need to have some spectator masochism, because, as I wrote, the whole picture will develop only in the final series.
Yes, it can also scare off violence - it is also in the spirit of Tarantino, bloody and savory. Black Railroader and Ladd Rousseau are especially delivered in this regard - with special cynicism and no less special black humor. So the fans of tarantinovskoy series is contraindicated.
Result: The series is unique. Neither the setting, nor the characters, nor even the soundtrack are typical for anime. If Japanese schoolchildren, mechs, sword and magic, karate ninjas, etc. are tired, Baccano! can be a breath of fresh air. Or a blow to the head with the subsequent pouring of a ketchup tank on it is already individual. 8 out of 10 Original
