I cannot say that I experienced great aesthetic pleasure or at least pleasure - there is nothing to experience it, but the film makes you think, and now most likely more deeply than I watch this film in the year of its release, during this time the world has changed somewhat and many situations shown in the film, you perceive it differently. The main character of the film is a 19-year-old Arab boy who is imprisoned for 6 years. He is such a typical outcast, illiterate, brought up in an orphanage, and then wandering around in the unknown, sullen, avoiding everything and everyone. Suddenly, he comes to the attention of a rather powerful leader of the Corsican group, who rules everything in this prison, who decides to make him “his Arab” – a kind of errand boy, ready for anything, and he must undergo initiation, killing a snitch. It turned out to be quite difficult for him - both because he had not killed anyone before, and because the man showed some interest in the guy. He carried out this task with great difficulty, although the ghost of the slain will now accompany him throughout his life, apparently. In the guy, however, quite unexpectedly erupted certain abilities and for 6 years he not only masters literacy, but also something else, he comes out of prison a completely different person. The plot without details and special spoilers is like this. However, not only the history of the formation of the main character attracts attention, but also the atmosphere in which it happens, Malik is an Arab, but he eventually becomes the master of the situation, and the case, meanwhile, takes place in France. The criminals in prison are almost all Arabs, blacks, Corsicans, there is no mention of the French, the jailers, it is true, are French, but the degree of their corruption in external observance of the rules is very large. And that's the same thing.
