Late Soviet Moscow in the film looks provincial. Life bubbles in the center with spacious apartments with high ceilings, the main place of the splash of Soviet intellectuality. Young people from the wealthy class do not look beyond this small place – beyond the newly built skyscraper university on the Lenin Hills – from their homeland, trying to teleport themselves if possible.
This is surrounded by a belt of concrete sleeping areas in wastelands - with quarries of building material next door - with restless inhabitants, where everything is somehow unclear for why; a narrow channel of communication with the outside world is maintained by an aunt from Tallinn, sometimes sending a roller board. Further beyond the Moscow Ring Road is an unknown void, where Basin, Ivan and the like will soon be in the army.
Hacks by the main character of the then characteristic inter-estate partition expectedly end in nothing: his passion courageous foray into the basement of high-rise buildings on the outskirts - in the vague assumption of sex with an interesting boy discovered because of the Garden Ring - is prudently limited ...
