After recently watching the last two films of the French director Henri Verneuil (Ashot Malakian), I downloaded several more of his films and today I watched one of them - "Melody from the Basement", 1963, which I once watched for a long time, but completely forgot how it is my usual. This is a film adaptation of the novel by American writer John Trinyan “Big jackpot”, I never understood why the French version has such a name, and not only a film, but also a novel. This film starred Jean Gabin and Alain Delon. Old thief Charles comes out after another jail time and decides to pull off his last case to ensure old age for himself and his wife, although it is not possible to say that they are poor, she has saved the rest of the money from old times. Due to the fact that Charles himself can no longer physically carry out the planned robbery of the casino, he takes his former cellmate Francis as partners - a young handsome man who will have to prepare the "soil" for the robbery, settling in a nearby hotel in advance and finding a way to penetrate behind the scenes, from where only you can get to the desired room with a safe. Everything goes almost according to plan, except for minor digressions and some actions of the same Francis, but alas, Charles chooses the completely wrong place for the last meeting, the end is unpredictable, which is interesting. So we have the opportunity to watch such an old black and white detective, shot in a classic style. I read that there is a painted copy, but this is not the same style.
