I don’t even really remember if I ever watched Louis Malle’s film “Ascenseur pour l’échafaud” (Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, 1958), so well I knew its contents, most likely, I watched once in a film club. But I decided to revise it anyway. This is Mal's first feature-length film, and he immediately invited actors to the main roles, which he will then shoot more than once - Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet, Lino Ventura will also flash. Despite the fact that in the end I still liked the film, the first half watched it with some effort, but from the middle it went more interesting. In principle, this is a criminal story, there are several crimes - the first in which lovers plot the perfect crime with the murder of their husband, and the second when a young guy and a girl steal a car, and then commit a number of rash acts, including a double murder. I, as an avid detective, still somewhat surprised by the behavior of Julien (Maurice Ronet) – he prepares the perfect crime, like an experienced person who carried out the instructions of the chief on a variety of cases related to obtaining data, and then makes a bunch of mistakes at once – forgets at the crime scene the rope, so in a hurry to take his feet, then sees it and runs back, leaving the engine of his car running, throwing there including his gun, and a folder with documents, which he is unknown for what he took with him (obviously, in order to make it easier to carry him in the next crime). So the temptation to steal his car is so great from the young hijacker that he will not fail to use it, the rash actions of the young couple just can still be explained by stupidity and recklessness. Well, then we see how, after the stupidities committed by the first investigator, the wise hero Lino Ventura still quickly solves both crimes. But if we abandon the analysis of details, and focus on the main idea that the author wanted to convey to us, the film is still not bad.
