Watch Louis Malle's 1992 film Damage. I was sure that once I watched this film, but did not remember the details, as it is usual for me, so I decided to reconsider, because in one group we talked about it. It is one of his English-language films, set in Britain, and the actors are almost all British except Juliette Binoche. A former doctor and now a minister without portfolio, Stephen Fleming (Jeremy Irons) lives with his wife Ingrid (Miranda Richardson) and youngest daughter Sally (Jemma Clark), they have an adult son Martin (Rupert Graves), a fairly successful journalist. Stephen is also very successful in his work, he faces the post of Minister of Health. And everything would go well if the son did not have a new friend Anna Barton (Juliette Binoche), who turned out to be a very peculiar girl who decided to introduce herself to her friend’s father at a party. As soon as they looked into each other’s eyes, the same lightning strike followed – they instantly fell in love with each other, and from that moment everything went awry. Their all-consuming passion, meeting in different places, sometimes completely unexpected, led Stephen to the idea that they should be together, he will abandon his wife, who was rather wary of Anna, she is Martin, what was his surprise when Anna did not accept his proposal and offered to continue everything in the same spirit, they say, she will not get away from him. Things went on as usual, the wedding of Anna and Martin was already scheduled, even Anna’s mother appeared, with whom she very rarely contacted, who, meanwhile, immediately felt that something was wrong there and asked Stephen not to interfere with this marriage. Steven might have done that, but Anna took the initiative out of place, renting a secret apartment and sending him the keys to it. Unfortunately, it all ended tragically, after which the life of Stephen and his family went downhill, he lost everything, but was stuck with thoughts in this story. The least of all, it seems, in this story suffered Anna, who seems to have arranged her life. The story, of course, is very melodramatic, but it is not hackneyed, probably such stories happen in life, I hope, not always with such a tragic end. Here it is useless to analyze anything, here you can only observe and sympathize with or not sympathize with the parties. I must say, sometimes I was a little far from sympathy, although you can get into such a situation. The actors all played very well, so the film looks interesting, despite some excess of quite explicit sexual scenes.
