Having learned that at the international London auction "Sotheby" will be sold a sketch of Vrubel's painting stolen from the Rivne Museum, the Swiss architect Rastopchin informs the writer Stepanov, whom he met once in Zurich. This circumstance alarmed insurance companies: the return of the sketch to the USSR would threaten them with reimbursement of colossal insurance sums. Threats of blackmail forgery of documents have been launched. At the cost of huge efforts, Stepanov manages to take the picture to Moscow.
