With a dream of a new America The first 9 in six months and I never thought it would be a musical! The New York City neighborhood for expats from Latin America is becoming a dream destination. But what dream?
American? The one that cab owner Kevin Rosario cherishes for his daughter Nina, having struggled to pay for part of a smart girl's Stanford education, where she experienced all the charms of racism? The one “inherited” from her mother by the childless chief grandmother of the district Abuela Claudia, who came to the snowy city from hungry Cuba in the distant 43rd and became only a maid? The one in which you can win 96,000 in the lottery and spend it on a better life for yourself, leaving for a rich neighborhood?
No, it's not New York or the imposed American dream. This is Nueva York and Suenito. This is a mixture of flags of Chile, Domicana, Cuba and Jamaica. This is their neighborhood, their city, their country. And they won't give it to the rich and the hipsters. And they'll prove it to you in two and a half hours. They have their own Suenito, a “little dream.” The dream is to be yourself, with your culture in this environment, tormenting them with racism, blacking out the lights for a few days in the 40-degree heat and imposed for years to come poverty, from which no work can save from morning to evening.
The imposed American dream is huge, but it did not bring joy to Abuela or the thousands of others who “inherited it.” And others she just destroyed, like Tio (father of the illegal boy Sonny from the Dominican Republic), who “like a gas station American” stupidly stares at a baseball game on TV with a can of beer in his hands.
The dream of Nina, Vanessa and Usnavi is small, but it will bring them happiness. Because it's your own, and it requires you, as heir to the culture of your people, as Abuela said, to defend your dignity in small things. Without going through these little things, they will definitely achieve results. Nina will definitely understand how undocumented children will make their way here, and the young fighter for justice Sonny will definitely make his way here. And only such efforts will be a renewed country, people with different dreams and a decent life.
