One of the best mystical thrillers... “Others” is, in my opinion, one of the most unusual films of cinema that I have seen. This atmosphere, you know, is created by just a picture. This is one of my favorite movies in the genre – a mystical thriller. Let me explain why...
Grace Stewart lives on an island belonging to the UK, but located near the territory of France, together with her two children suffering from a very strange disease, they can not stand daylight. They live alone, but on one cloudy, foggy day a group of three people come to them, who are the new servants in this house. After that, very strange events begin to occur in the house, the doors open by themselves, strange sounds are heard.
From the very first frame, the film is saturated with mysticism. Even the foreword about how life began on earth is made in this spirit. The main object of the film is the house. When looking at one house from the inside, you can immediately put ten points for a visual performance. Everything in it is soaked in Gothic style, it is a red piano. It was a very good idea for the writers to make the children sick, otherwise the film would have lost half of its atmosphere without these constantly darkened rooms. But the main feature of this film is not the style, but the script.
In the story I have summarized, you can see what the film is about. The presence of ghosts in the human world. They are everywhere, and very often the world of the living and the world of the dead come into contact in some particular place. But the main feature of this film is that the director showed that not only we are afraid of ghosts, but they are also us. This is a stark contrast to Shyamalan’s very similar film The Sixth Sense. As I said, these films are very similar, but “Other” for me is immeasurably more valuable, although the idea is largely stolen, but I will not focus on this, especially since “Other” I watched much earlier than “The Sixth Sense”.
I don’t really like Nicole Kidman as an actress. I don’t like one of her roles, but she was brilliant in this film. Her desperate, half-crazy mother turned out just fine. There are a lot of great scenes with her participation, and in general this image of her goes very well. Calm, reasonable, nervous: Nicole Kidman was able to convey all this very reliably. And there is no curvature, as she idiotically played in “Australia”, with this role even to compare silly. I would also like to mention James Bentley as Nicolos, the son of Nicole Kidman. The cast as a whole is not bad, but Kidman stands out a lot on a general level, so the rest almost do not stand out.
I love this film very much, for its unsurpassed Gothic style, indescribable atmosphere, and the final for me turned out very unexpected, there was a sense of deception, but unlike many other films where you think that this is why they did it, the film does not suit the person, everything was spoiled, in this case, this feeling is pleasant. Look definitely builds, and fans of the genre of mystical thrillers are required.
