At first, I was not even going to watch this film, but then, after reading the reviews of some of my friends from film groups, I decided to watch it. American Fiction, 2023, directed by Cord Jefferson, is his first film to direct. The black director decided to make a film about the attitude of blacks to the current American “post” in relation to blacks. The main character is a quite successful writer Thelonious Ellison, nicknamed Monk (translated as a monk) teaches literature at the university, but one day he is sent on vacation after a complaint by a white student who is “insulted” by his use of such words (and in naming literary works they discuss there) as a nigger. He is surprised – it does not insult him, why is she insulted, but no one listens to him (the administration there is also white, they are trending). He goes first to some congress (which is quite small, however), and then to his relatives, with whom he has not seen for almost ten years, after the funeral of his father, who committed suicide, with whom he was close, unlike other family members, he has a mother with a beginning Alzheimer, a doctor sister who looks after her mother, comes and a brother, also a doctor (and, of course, gay), they generally had a medical family, his father was also a doctor, Monk became such a renegade who did not continue the family tradition. And, as it often happens, trouble does not come alone - a 50-year-old sister dies suddenly from a heart attack. Soon there is an acute question of what to do with a mother who already needs round-the-clock care, and a decent nursing home costs a lot of money, which they simply do not have. The last book Monk none of the publishers do not want to print, he is almost in despair and once he sits at the computer and under a pseudonym writes a book in which he includes all the existing stereotypes in relation to blacks, presenting them to the very little-educated cattle, whom they are considered by the beautiful white public, extolling another black writer who has also managed to beat these stereotypes - it is so vital! He brings it to his agent, who at first does not even dare to offer it to someone, but still offers a couple of films, and then offers a more unexpected publication for this amount. Monk is terrified, he even changes the title of the book to completely obscene, but this does not stop them. Then more. But the benefit is obvious - now he can pay for his mother's stay in the home of the aged. We're getting ready to see something completely unexpected at the end, and we certainly see. All of this is just a made-up story that obviously could happen in America today. And in life, blacks continue to experience discrimination, it is shown in small patches. It seemed to me that the film played well what is happening there, of course, the director was also in the cohort that praises him for this, as well as his hero, the film was nominated for an Oscar for best film and best adapted script, based on the novel by Percival Everett. I liked the movie.
