The story really turned out to be quite simple, although not quite ordinary, the film is based on an incident that happened to a real character, Alvin Strait, who at one time attracted the attention of the public, but Strait did not want publicity and refused to participate in any kind of show, as it has always been loved and still loved in America, and now not only there. Alvin Strait (Richard Farnsworth) - 73-year-old man with very poor health and somewhat eccentric and stubborn, moving with only two sticks, learns that his 80-year-old brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) had a serious heart attack. Alvin has been living together for many years with his not quite normal daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek), and with his brother he did not communicate for 10 years, then there was a serious quarrel between them. After a little thought, Alvin decides to go to his brother to restore the broken relationship, because to see that death for both is not far off, we should forgive each other. Alvin doesn’t see well, he doesn’t have a driver’s license, he can’t stand buses, the only “means of transportation” with which he still manages is an old lawnmower, which barely rants, so he decides to go from his state of Iowa to Wisconsin, where his brother lives, attaching a trailer to it. The first attempt ended unsuccessfully, but Alvin wasn't the one to give up, he buys the next used lawnmower and starts his shallow journey (about 300 miles) at 5mph. The road, of course, is not easy, especially given the terrain, which sometimes turns out to be hilly and even mountainous. All sorts of accidents happen to him, sometimes other people help him on the road, even offer him a ride by car, but he is true to himself and his plan, so eventually he gets to his brother, they meet. This is a really simple road movie, we watch his movements, incidents, behavior, imbued with involuntary sympathy for this stubborn eccentric. The film is also very good, although there is nothing outstanding in the countryside that extends around the landscapes, sometimes we see a starry sky above our head, which since childhood was of great importance to the hero - this is both beauty and infinity. A good musical accompaniment, the music was written by Angelo Badalamenti, who often collaborated with Lynch. And yes, it's really not a typical Lynch movie.
