For a long time I was going to see the film “Male-female”, but it somehow fell out of my field of view, although I had it for a long time, and then yesterday, finally, I watched. I’m not a big fan of Godard’s films, but I like some of them (Charlotte and her Jules, On Last Breath, Contempt, and especially Live Your Life), his subsequent films I just didn’t watch, somehow got to see one of his last films – “Goodbye, Speech” – and I didn’t like him. So the film “Male-female” did not make a special impression on me, although I watched all the same. I read that this is a film adaptation of Maupassant’s stories (mostly this is “The Field’s Girlfriend”), it is possible that I once read them, but I do not remember, the film also did not awaken memories about this, so I re-read them. Of course, there is some similarity. In this film, in 15 episodes, Godard tries to understand the peculiarities of male and female perception and thinking, and in connection with this, actions and the development of relationships. Much attention is paid to the topic of violence, and male violence is aimed mainly at the men themselves (a man stabs himself with a knife, in the end, Paul dies ridiculously), and female violence is directed at men, not at herself (a woman in a cafe shoots her companion as a result of a loud quarrel, not even taking into account the presence of their child). It is surprising how calmly the characters react to these events. Arguments about politics are also very different among men and women, women, for the most part, are not very interested in it and wisely keep silent on this topic (this is shown by polls conducted by the main character). All this is portrayed in the form of dialogues, and the political agenda of the time is often interwoven there (the action takes place in 1965). I must say, it seemed to me that it was in vain that he invited Jean-Pierre Leo to the lead male role, not his actor, as far as he is on the spot in Truffaut’s films, so did not impress me in this film, although he received several awards for this role. Performers of female roles (Chantal Goya, Marlene Jobert, Catherine-Isabelle Duport) play well. What can I say about my impression - check the box that I watched, but did not experience much pleasure.
