Truffaut was looking for a boy to play a role in the movie 400 Blows. Jean decided to take a chance, went to the casting and was approved for this role. Since then, cinema has become his life. He even left the lyceum where he studied. In 1959, the picture was released on screens. Leo played the role of a lonely, bullied boy in the family, whom his parents handed over to a correctional colony. The play of the young actor conquered and amazed the audience with its sincerity.
In 1962, Truffaut invited Jean-Pierre to participate in the film “Love in 20 years”, and 6 years later again entrusted him with the role of Antoine Doinel, but already matured and past the army, in the second film of the series “Stolen kisses” (1968).
Jean-Pierre was interested in different directors. In the film “Start” he worked with Skolimovsky, and in the film “The Seven-Headed Lion” starred in Glauber Roche.
In the late 60s, Leo often invites director J.L. Godard to his paintings. He played in his films Male and Female (1966), Chinese Woman (1967), Made in the United States (1967), Weekend (1967). Jean-Pierre had an amazing ability to feel what the director wanted from him and bring it to life on screen.
In 1970, the continuation of the story about Antoine is released - the film "Family Home". Marriage, childbirth, betrayal, return to the family hearth. In this film, Leo plays a mature man, and the performer himself is a fully mature actor. Then there was the film “Two Englishwomen and the Continent”, and in 1973 – the film “American Night”.
In 1979, Jean-Pierre starred in the last, fourth film of the epic about Doinel.
"Eliminary love" A story about a divorce from his wife and a meeting with another woman.
Leo always wanted to try himself as a director, and for several years he worked as an assistant to various directors, including Godard (Married Woman, Alphaville, Mad Pierrot) and his teacher Truffaut (Tender Skin).
