The most "biblical" film of Zvyagintsev - "Exile" (with reference to the Bible in its title) and the apostolic letter of Paul to the Corinthians (read by an unreasonable child in the very apogee of the storyline): "Love endures long-suffering, mercy, love does not envy, love is not exalted, is not proud, does not profane, does not seek his own, does not irritate, does not think evil, does not rejoice in the truth, but rejoiceses in everything, believes everything, hopes everything, endures everything." The main character of "Exile" did not understand this (or did not know, or did not want to know), because he got rid of his dark side of the soul (personified in the film by his brother), when it was too late - for which he was punished. The price, alas, was too high, simply exorbitant. But for payment, apparently, should come and cleansing. This author leaves us to speculate... More: there is no need to look for specifics in this film - the film is outside the temporary and outside the scene (although the shooting took place, I understood from the credits, the village - in Moldova, and the scenery there is clearly built (both house and church, etc.) - can be seen with the naked eye, and urban - in France and Belgium, possibly in Russia). For eternal values are in no way attached to this (time and place). And this effect - the action takes place incomprehensibly when and incomprehensibly where, gradually putting pressure on the psyche, still gives us the opportunity to fully concentrate on a long parable with a clear and bright philosophical and biblical bias, even a strong roll. Well, love... The viewer faces a dilemma: life in the absence of love or its impossibility. Which the director brilliantly showed.
