The film shows the path of a Jew from a politically illiterate apprentice to a communist director of a shoe factory. The local Jew David Gorelick, the handyman-tailor, day in and day out dreamed of his small, personal happiness. He dreamed of his own workshop and traditionally patriarchal comfort. The First World War began. Then the turbulent years of revolution and civil war swept over the country. Under the influence of these events, class consciousness began to awaken in the tailor from the town.
