I often watch all sorts of films and TV series on so-called social and political topics, so this time I watched a rather well-known mini-series in cinematic (and not only) circles “Show Me a Hero” / Show Me a Hero, filmed in 2015 based on the documentary book by Lisa Belkin, the script was written by the same team that wrote the script “The Wire”, i.e. people who try to stick to reality, not bring all sorts of fiction, although, probably, they did not do without them. The book and the series are based on the fate of a real man - the mayor of the city of Yonkers, located near New York, Nick Vasisko, whose star as quickly rose and quickly faded away, he did not fit into the real world. He began his career as a police officer, but then got an education, was elected to the city council, and then became the youngest mayor at 28 years old. Perhaps because of his age, too young for a politician, perhaps in his character, being, as I thought, a bit arrogant and somewhat naive, he could not hold on to his post and quickly failed his career and there was no one who would really support him except his wife – everyone betrayed everyone, he did not shy away from this, however, believed that he should be supported and he should be grateful, but he was just used. He came to this post at a very difficult time for the city - just solved the issue of building social housing for the poor, and even before he came to the post of mayor, the court ruled in favor of a project that involves the construction of such housing not in a specially designated place, but interspersed in prosperous "white" areas, against which residents of these areas very zealously protested, and the minorities themselves were not enthusiastic about the project, because they did not want to live surrounded by people who hate them. This was a policy of desegregation promoted by the most progressive. And at first Vasisko was also against this project, which he won his votes, but then he acted as a champion of the law, the law is the law and it must be implemented, and this is exactly what his voters least wanted, insults and threats fell on him. Before our eyes passes not only the fate of the mayor, but also the lives of these people, we see that the fears of residents of prosperous areas are groundless, but not absolutely unambiguous. I thought as I watched it, I wonder how today, after all these BLM events, would make such a movie. And Nick Wasisco couldn’t stand it, losing the next election for the presidency of the city Council, he shot himself on the grave of his father, he was only 34 years old. As one character said in the film, quoting Fitzgerald, “Show me a hero and I’ll write a tragedy.”
The series, given the theme, of course, on the amateur, but play good actors, first of all, so attracted to me Oscar Isaac in the role of Nick Wasisco.
