I want to note the liveliness of the characters of this seemingly textbook story. Children not only have an open-minded view of things, they are, unfortunately, still naive, impulsive and recklessly brave. And adults can throw up an unpleasant surprise – when it comes to personal gain, and especially about life, their own and loved ones, decisions can be made very cynical. So many romantic cliches about love and heroism in Strange Things are quietly deconstructed. This is not immediately apparent.
Special effects should be praised separately. The parallel world looks eerie, making you remember Silent Hill. The monster is also good and original.
The guys played well, got used to the role. Millie Bobby Brown was particularly persuasive in the role of Eleven – how her eyes changed depending on the scene, then tense, understanding, full of restrained pain, then cold and threatening, dispassionate, like an optical sight! A convincing image of a superman under the guise of a street girl. Charismatic Sheriff Hopper performed by David Harbour. I remember the character of Charlie Heaton – Jonathan Byers, something close to me the hero, the same unsociable and gloomy fan of heavy rock, like me.
Result: cool characters, great atmosphere, twisted plot - what else do you need? Yes, many moves and images are secondary. But the point here is not plagiarism – the authors clearly wanted to make just such a nostalgic series, to make many viewers remember their childhood: board games, collections of science fiction stories, reckless bike rides and night “forays”, the first seasons of “X-Files”, “horror” and action films on videotapes. Doubtful? Look at the poster and all doubts will disappear. It's a whole basket of Easter eggs for geeks. And that's damn cool. 9 out of 10 Original
