Better read the novel!
The film resembles a castrate without a soul, but with a beautiful sign! There is almost nothing left of Remarque’s novel! The names of the main characters have been changed! Clerfe became Bobby Deerfield and Lillian Dunkirk became Morelli. Given that Morelli is the surname of another heroine of the novel (a woman with whom Clerfay was close to Lillian), it becomes generally unclear what Pollack wanted to create.
Lillian from a refined and feminine persona turned into an unbred husband with poor manners and lack of opinion.
Clerfe, having become Deerfield, from a German living today, turned into an American with the conceit of the New Arch, hiding himself behind a thicket of dark glasses.
There is almost nothing left of the story! Important dialogues (with tanker Goering), storylines and heroes are omitted, the finale is changed and the meaning is completely distorted.
Maybe, if you do not read the book before watching the film, the latter will seem interesting, otherwise this film miscarriage can be called not a film adaptation, but blasphemy!
