The Sound of Metal is a two-hour story about noise and silence inside and out.
Drummer Ruby, who drowns himself with heavy music, loses his hearing. Getting into a community of deaf mutes, he tries to accept deafness as a special state of silence. But he fails to achieve inner peace, the cacophony of his own thoughts is constantly distracting. Ruby is torn between old and new life. After an implant surgery, he breaks ties between himself and the community, but suddenly realizes he has nowhere to go back. The once familiar world is met with chaotic noise, distorted by a sound grinding like metal.
