Having risen at the head of the English kingdom after battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror after some time ordered a general land census in the country. This census, dating from 1085 to 1086 and called the Book of the Last Judgment, is the first such document in Europe. An unprecedented source of knowledge about England at the time contains information about more than 30,000 estates and 13,000 villages, but even today it is not known for what purpose this work was done.
