William Ford Gibson was born on March 17, 1948 in Conway, South Carolina. The future writer graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in philology. In 1968, he left the United States, and in 1972 began living in Vancouver on the Pacific coast of Canada. That’s where William started writing fiction. The first works of Gibson are more like futuristic stories that tell about the penetration of cybernetics into human life. In 1977, the author’s first story in the genre of science fiction “Fragments of a holographic rose” was published.
Due to the direction of his creations, Gibson is considered the founder of the cyberpunk style. It is a style that contributed to the revolution in genre literature of the 1980s. Millions of readers have learned about William Gibson through his trilogy Cyberspace. And some works came out of the pen of the author thanks to collaboration and co-authorship with Bruce Sterling.
Despite the fact that Gibson has never been to Japan, this country occupies quite a large space in his stories, for example, in his tetralogy Neuromancer. William considered the genre of fiction only a tool that could make something new in the world of literature.
In addition to fantastic stories, his prose is permeated with a pronounced socio-psychological and socio-philosophical character. This author is considered the best stylist of modern American literature. He is the first person to voice the idea and describe virtual reality. There are also two films based on Gibson’s books:
Johnny Mnemonic and the New Rose Hotel. He has also won numerous literary awards.
