Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783 in New York, in the family of a wealthy merchant. His father emigrated from Scotland and participated in the American Revolution. At the insistence of his parents, Washington Irving was preparing for a career in law, which did not attract him at all.
In 1804-1806, the future writer toured Europe; for a short time he was a lawyer, and until 1818 he was a representative of a family firm in England, then he was an attaché of the American Embassy in Madrid. The last two decades of his life Irving spent in the manor "Sunny side" near the town of Terrytown-on-Hudson. The writer died there on November 28, 1859.
The first literary experiments of Washington Irving were newspaper essays, which were published under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. Together with his brother William and writer D. Polding, Washington, Irving published a humorous almanac "Salamagundi". In 1809 was published "History of New York" - a humorous interpretation of the American "ancient".It brought the writer success and made the name Nickerbroker household. Most famous are such books of Irving as "The Book of Sketches" (especially the stories from it "Rip Van Winkle" and "Leged of Sleepy Hollow", "The Traveler's Tales", "The Legends of the Alhambra", as well as the biography of H. Columb, O. Goldsmith, J. Washington.
