After graduating from high school in 1968, Macy became a member of the anti-war hippie movements, unable to resist the use of drugs such as marijuana, LSD and others. During this time he studied veterinary medicine at a college in West Virginia, then he moved to Goddard College, where he entered the theater.
In 1971, he graduated from college, moved to Chicago and became a bartender. Over the next year, together with David Mamet, he successfully organized the St. Nicholas Theatre Studio, where Macy played many wonderful roles.
In 1980, Macy moved to New York, where he participated in more than 50 Broadway and other performances. One of his best roles was as a turtle in The Boy Who Loved Trolls in 1984.
