Raymond Chandler

Born in Chicago, Illinois. After the divorce of his parents, he left with his mother for Europe and became (in 1907) a subject of the British Crown. He received his education in London, then in France and Germany. Chandler served in the armies of Canada and England, worked for several newspapers, then returned to his homeland and settled in California. He worked for an oil company for a while. During the Great Depression, he turned to writing again.
His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. Chandler wrote six more novels and a number of small novels, the main character of which is a private detective Philip Marlowe, as well as several plays. In 1956 he regained American citizenship.
Nominated for an Oscar. He won the Edgar Prize twice, in 1946 and 1954. In his last year, he was elected president of the American Detective Club. He died in California.
