Born on June 24, 1842. The youngest of nine children in the family. At the age of seventeen he entered the Kentucky Military Academy. He participated in the Civil War on the side of the Confederates, was wounded, demobilized with the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he worked as a night watchman in a bank until he finally found himself in journalism and political cartoons. In 1872 he left on the instructions of the editorial office in London, where he spent four years and earned for his sarcastic articles the nickname “Beers with bitterness” (Bitter Bierce; by analogy with Bitter Beer – “bitter beer”.)
In 1876, Beers returned to America and began working for the Sunday Exeminer newspaper in San Francisco. It was after returning home that his best stories and articles were written. Beers was even called Samuel Johnson of the West Coast.
However, professional success did not bring Biers satisfaction, because he had troubles in his personal life. In 1889, Beers' eldest son died in a duel for a woman, and the youngest son died in 1901 of alcoholism. In 1904, his wife left him. In 1913, Beers crossed the Mexican border and disappeared without a trace. Nobody saw him again.
Ambrose Biers is believed to have died on December 26, 1913.
