Deserved recognition came to him quite late. The action in Bergman’s novels takes place mainly in Bergslagen (a region in central Sweden), the imaginary city of Wadschöping, where the events of the novels of Markurells i Wadkping (1919), Grandmother and Lord God (Farmor och Var Herre, 1921) and other works of his take place. On the creation of some novels – first of all, Chiefs Fru Ingeborg (Chefen fru Ingeborg, 1924) – Bergman was inspired by the teachings of Freud. In drama, Bergman was prone to a bold experiment, which was especially evident in the play Mr. Schliemann Will Come (Herr Sleeman kommer, 1917). His plays The Rabbit (1928) and The Swedenhielms (1925) were the most successful. Bergman died in Berlin on January 1, 1931.
