Born in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) in 1949, after graduating in 1971 from the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) University (Philological Faculty) he was hired at the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House), where he works to this day, now as a leading researcher. Member of the Union of Writers of St. Petersburg. In 1985 he defended his dissertation Valery Bryusov and the literary movement of the 1900s, in 1995 – his doctoral dissertation Andrey Bely in the 1900s. Life and Literary Activity, in May 1997 was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The main subject of specialization is the history of Russian literature of the early twentieth century. The first publication - in Tartu in 1971, in subsequent years published more than 200 works devoted to the study of life and work, as well as the publication of unpublished texts by Andrei Bely, V. Brusov, A. Blok, M. Voloshin, Z. Gippius, M. Kuzmin, I. Annensky, B. Pasternak and other writers of the Symbolist and Post-Symbolist era. Participated in various conferences in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tartu, Koktebel, as well as abroad (USA, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria). A.V. Lavrov published a monograph “Andrey Bely in the 1900s” (M. 1995), more than ten separate editions of classics of Russian literature of the early twentieth century (V. Brusov, Andrei Bely, M. Voloshin, D. Merezhkovsky, Z. Gippius, M. Kuzmin, etc.).
Alexander Vasilyevich is a member of the editorial boards of the series "Literary Monuments" and "New Library of the Poet", biographical dictionary "Russian Writers". 1800-1917, magazine "New literary review", a number of other publications and publishing series.
