Ivanov began writing early, even while studying in journalism. At first it was correspondence and newspaper articles, but in 1954 in the magazine "Peasant" published his first story "Rain". Subsequent stories of this period were later included in the book Alkin Songs, which was published in 1956 in the Novosibirsk Publishing House.
Ivanov’s work has pronounced party-patriotic features. The life of the post-revolutionary Siberian village was reflected by the writer in his first novel “The Permitter” (1958). Any creative person of those years, if he wanted to be recognized by the Soviet authorities, had to pay considerable attention to the theme of "creation of a new society and a new, Soviet man." Ivanov was no exception, but unlike many of his literary colleagues, he sincerely believed in the idea of the victory of socialism and communism.
