Fethullah Gulen – Reputable Turkish
Now living in exile in the United States, he is one of the most influential Muslims in the world.
He was born on April 27, 1941 in the family of an imam. He received a classical Muslim education, learned the whole Koran, and at the age of 14 read his first sermon. He was educated in the best, most prestigious madrassas, worked for many years as a preacher until he retired in 1981, but continued to preach in the largest mosques in Turkey.
The teachings he preaches include, in particular, the assertion that Muslims should serve people of all concessions for the common good and good of the nation, and that people of different religions, at least Christians, Muslims and Jews, should conduct interfaith dialogue. He also argues that studying sciences such as physics, chemistry and mathematics means worshiping God. Such ideas led to the emergence of a large number of “Gülen schools” founded by his followers. These schools, perfectly equipped, with a modern approach to teaching, expensive, are considered one of the best in the country.
In 1999, Fethullah went to the United States for treatment, where he remained, fearing persecution for political reasons in his homeland. The preacher was in fact the subject of the indictment, which the Turkish authorities conducted for about eight years, from 2000 to 2008. In 2014, an international warrant was issued for his arrest after several dozen Turkish journalists from opposition media outlets sympathetic to him were arrested.
