Tengiz Abuladze was born in Kutaisi on January 31, 1924. After school, he studied at the railway technical school, and then continued his studies at the Tbilisi Theatre Institute on a course with Georgy Tovstonogov. After successful graduation, Tengiz entered VGIK (Sergei Yutkevich’s workshop). His thesis was a documentary and journalistic film about the famous conductor Dmitry Arakishvili. Tengiz Abuladze was born in Kutaisi on January 31, 1924. Tengiz graduated from VGIK in 1953. In 1956, in collaboration with his friend Rezo Chkheidze, Tengiz shot his first film “Lurja Magdana”. This film was awarded a special mention at the Cannes Film Festival and became the first Soviet film to receive a prize in the West.

Tengiz Abuladze holds the title of Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR, People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR, People’s Artist of the USSR. He is a laureate of the Shota Rustaveli State Prize of the Georgian SSR and the Lenin Prize.
In the last years of his life, Tengiz made almost no films. On March 6, 1994, the famous Georgian film director and educator died in Tbilisi. Tengiz Abuladze was buried in the Didubian pantheon of Georgia.
