He was born on June 17, 1937 in Los Angeles in the family of a prominent editor Arthur P. Schmidt, twice an Oscar nominee, who worked on such films as “Only Girls In Jazz”, “Sunset Boulevard”, Sabrina, “Sayonara”. Arthur Jr. recalled that his education began when he watched his father edit Sunset Boulevard (1950). He later graduated from the University of Santa Clara with a degree in English, but devoted himself to editing.
Schmidt was nominated three times for the Academy Awards, and lost only once, in the case of the film The Miner's Daughter. Luck awaited him on the movies.
