The author of the famous book “Republic of Shkid”, known as Leonid Panteleyev, was born on August 9 (22), 1908 in Petrograd, in the family of Cossack officer Ivan Adrianovich Eremeev. The revolution of 1917, and then the civil war, destroyed their family and became one of the reasons for the change of name. After long wanderings between the revolutionary Peter and the hungry Volga region, after the death of their father in 1918, Leonid becomes an orphan.

Returning to Petrograd in 1921, he enters the Dostoevsky School of Social and Individual Education (the famous Shkid), created by V. N. Soroka-Rosinsky, where his acquaintance with Grigory Belykh takes place. Soon with his new friend, Leonid Panteleyev flees to Ukraine, to Kharkiv, to enter the acting classes. Another adventure of friends ended in failure, and in 1925 they were again forced to return to their native city, then renamed Leningrad. Impressed by their wandering life, they jointly write the famous book “The Republic of Shkid”, which is published in 1927. The future chairman of the Union of Writers of the USSR, Maxim Gorky, spoke very positively about it even then. In just 10 years, until 1936, the book “Republic of Shkid” was reprinted ten times only in Russian, translated many languages of the peoples of the USSR and repeatedly published abroad. At the same time, L. Panteleyev meets Sergei Marshak, Evgeny Schwartz, Vladimir Lebedev and Nikolai Oleynikov.
In 1933, L. Panteleyev’s story “Package”, dedicated to the Civil War, was published. Many people know her from the famous film production with the wonderful actor V. Zolotukhin in the title role. And in 1939 saw the light of the story “Lenka Panteleev”.
Heavy siege winter of Leningrad 1941-1942 L. Panteleyev passed together with the inhabitants of this courageous hero city. In serious condition, he was taken by plane in July 1942 to the “big land”. A. A. Fadeev. In January 1944, after the lifting of the blockade, L. Panteleyev returned to his native city in the direction of the Central Committee of the Komsomol. He works a lot in the periodical press and writes his new works. This is a new version of Lenka Panteleev (1939/1952), Our Masha and the autobiographical novella I Believe! (1990). It was published three years after the death of the author, according to his spiritual testament. /
