Shamil Tarpischev is a tennis player, coach, outstanding figure of Russian and Soviet sports. Shamil was born in Moscow, his mother – Marya Tarpishcheva, father – Anvyar Tarpishchev. Shamil's parents are from Mordovia, lived in the Tatar village of Tatar Yunki. Tarpischev studied at the State Central Institute of Physical Culture. He successfully participated in international and Russian competitions in tennis, in 1966 he became a master of sports.

In 1974, Shamil became a senior coach of DYNAMO, head coach of the Soviet Union, captain of the USSR, CIS and Russia teams in the Davis Cup and the Soviet Union team in the Federation Cup. Under his leadership, Soviet tennis players were able to win twenty-six gold medals at European championships, become semi-finalists of the Davis Cup and the Federation Cup, finalists of the Royal Cup. Tarpischev was captain of the European team in the match of Asia and Europe in 1983. Shamil was also President of the National Sports Foundation, Chairman of the Coordination Committee for Sport and Physical Culture under the President of Russia from 1993 to 1997.
From 1994 to 1996, Shamil Tarpishchev was Chairman of the State Committee of the Russian Federation for Tourism and Physical Culture, Advisor to the Mayor of Moscow for Sport and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kremlin Cup (since 1996). Six years later, Tarpischev was appointed a member of the Presidium of the Presidential Council for Physical Culture and Sports. He became the chairman of the commission engaged in the development of priority directions of state policy in the field of physical culture and sports, and also developed a strategy for the development of Russian sports.
Since 1994, Shamil Tarpishchev has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Russian Olympic Committee, and in 1996 - of the International Olympic Committee.
In 2003, Tarpischev tried himself in the cinema, starring in the film.
