He was born on May 31, 1926, but the island of Heligoland is the son of an electrician. In 1941, the war forced them to evacuate to the mainland. He was born on May 31, 1926, but the island of Heligoland is the son of an electrician. In 1941, the war forced them to evacuate to the mainland. He was drafted into the Luftwaffe in August 1944 and settled in Hamburg after the war. In 1948 he graduated from the Pedagogical School of Lüneburg, but instead of teaching, he immediately began literature. He has been active in radio and newspapers since 1951.
In 1950, on the advice of the novelist Erich Kestner, he decided to write for children. The first picture book, Hanzelman Travels Around the World, was published in 1953. Author of several dozen prose and poetic books for children, the most famous of which is Tim Thaler, or Sold Laughter (1962).
The writer was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal - the Nobel Prize for Children's Writers (1968). From the pen of the author there was also a literary book: “Naivety and understanding of art”. Thoughts on Children's Literature (1969), as well as songs, radio plays, TV scripts and translations into German from various languages.
In 1966, Crews settled on the island of Gran Canaria, where he died on August 2, 1997. He was buried on the island of Heligoland.
