Richard Eyre was born on 28 March 1943 in the United Kingdom. After school, he studied at two universities - Cambridge and Oxford.
Richard began his professional career in 1967 at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. Then he continued his directing work at the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain, where he staged such Shakespearean plays as Richard III, King Lear, Hamlet, as well as the opera La Traviata.

In 2006, audiences and critics praised Ayr’s next project, The Scandalous Diary, a film adaptation of Zoe Heller’s novel. This instructive story about how loneliness can turn a person into a monster has touched millions of people.

In 1997, the Queen of England awarded the director the title SERA for his contribution to English cinema.
