Isao Takahata was born on October 29, 1935. In his childhood, he was not too fond of drawing and did not dream of the career that made him famous. In 1959, Isao graduated from the University of Tokyo with a degree in French literature. The animation attracted a young philologist-student after watching the French animated film “The King and the Mockingbird”, staged based on Andersen’s fairy tale. When, after graduation, fate brought him to the animation studio, he immediately agreed to work as an assistant director. Isao’s teacher and mentor at the studio was Yasuo Otsuki. In 1968, Takahata made his first feature film, The Prince of the North. But the debut of the young animator did not pay off at the box office, and he had to leave the studio.
In 1971, Isao Takahata joined A Production Studio under the direction of Daikichiro Kusube. Together, they wanted to create an animation based on the book Pippi Long Stocking by writer Astrid Lindgren and went to Sweden to get permission. But Astrid turned them down. In the same year, Takahata together with Kotabe and Miyazaki directed the animated series Heidi - Girl of the Alps.
In 1976, viewers of the country saw the animation "3,000 Leagues in Search of a Mother". In his work, Takahata tried to bring reality as close as possible to the world of anime. But, unfortunately, Kotabe and Miyazaki did not understand his ideas and, dissatisfied with the result, temporarily parted ways with Isao. In 1979-1981, Takahata worked on the adaptation of the children's book Anna of the Green Mezzans, as well as on the film.

In 1984, Miyazaki was commissioned to make a full-length animated film Nausicaa of the Valley of Winds. He agreed, but on condition that Takahata be the producer. Friendship was restored and the film was excellent. And next year, the friends decide to open a joint animation company Studio Ghibli. In 1986, Isao produced the animated film Laputa Heavenly Castle, directed by Miyazaki.
His most famous animation - "The Grave of Fireflies" - Tahakata shot in 1988. After this work, he became famous all over the world. In the period from 1991 to 2004, animated films “Tanuki War in the Heisei and Pomko Periods”, “Our Neighbors of Yamada”, “Yesterday”, “Winter Days” were released.
According to Isao Takahata, his work has always been influenced by Italian neorealism, French cinema of the 60s and the art of expressionists.
