Jonathan Demme was born on February 22, 1944 in New York City.
He began writing screenplays for low-budget films in the early 70s, and later gained recognition as a director - for the sharp style of his films, for eccentric characters and unexpected plots.
The masterpiece that brought him world fame was the film “Silence of the Lambs” (1991), for which he received an Oscar for best director, as well as the film “Philadelphia” (1993).
