Directed by Jacques Fredericks. After crushing the dreams and hopes of bourgeois parents and not choosing a military career for himself (his great-grandfather was a general) and failing the exams for officer school, he worked for two years at an arms factory. His desire to become an actor was resisted by his father, who eventually gave in on the condition that his son never use his real name in his career. He arrived in Paris in 1911 and began to perform small roles on stage and in films, but soon became interested in directing. Soon he was appointed assistant to the director Gaston Ravel and then the First World War began. Most French directors were drafted into the army, and Fader was given the opportunity to direct sooner than he had hoped. His early films, for the most part comedy, were acceptable, but did not attract much attention. In 1917, shortly after he married the famous actress Françoise Rosay, he was mobilized into the Belgian army and served as an actor in the military troupe of director Victor Francen until the end of the war.
