By his own admission, he was fascinated by cinema as a college student, and most of his talent is the result of repeated views of films by famous classical directors - John Ford, Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Orson Welles.
After the release of the film “Song of the Road” (1955), he was proclaimed the creator of a neo-realistic direction in Indian cinema. It was with this film that one of the most brilliant directorial careers began not only in India, but throughout the world.
He is one of three directors who won the Best Director award at the Berlin Film Festival more than once.
