Born in Austin, Texas. He studied at Michigan State University. He made his debut in fiction with the short story “Picnic nearby” (1974, “Fantasy & Science Fiction”) and soon established himself as one of the most interesting writers of the 70s-80s. In terms of freshness of ideas, complexity of content, sophistication of composition, John Varley was almost unparalleled. His short stories appeared in two collections: Persistence of Vision (1978) and Barbie Murders (1980). Small form brought John Varley five awards: two - "Nebula" and three "Hugo", as well as five awards of the magazine "Locus". The action of Varley's first novel - "Direct on the Ophiuchus" (1977) - stretches from 500 years forward and is another attempt to create a "history of the future". This large-scale canvas was highly appreciated by colleagues in the workshop. The Titan trilogy (1979-1984) tells about the problems that arose after the beginning of the study of one of Saturn’s moons, as a result of which researchers fall into the other world with their own, not similar to earthly, laws. The novel “Millennium” (1983) on which the famous film was shot, is dedicated to the time travel of the crew and passengers of a dying aircraft.
