Soviet Screen No. 4, 1989:
Alla Evdokimova is known primarily as a theater actress - almost a quarter of a century she gave to the Maly Theatre. Unfortunately, the bright and gifted performer cinema uses little.
In the Kuban village, where Alla Evdokimova grew up, there was no theater, except for a school, amateur, which she herself organized. And yet the girl gained determination, went to Moscow and entered the VGIK, on a course led by Mikhail Romm.
— Mikhail Ilyich — says the actress — for life remained a favorite teacher, the highest authority. He was kind, and strict, and democratic, and unavailable. But, most importantly, he is uncompromising and always honest in life and in creativity. This also taught us the ability to defend our position.
The film debut of A. Evdokimova took place in the film “Silver Coach” directed by V. Ivchenko, where she embodied the fate of an orphanage girl yearning for her home.
After graduating from the institute, the aspiring actress entered the competition in the Maly Theater, where she was “examined” by B. Babochkin, M. Tsarev, M. Zharov. The new mentors demanded devotion to the theater, refusal to film at least for the next five years. . .
Time passed. On the stage of the famous theater, Evdokimova played Claudius in Gorky’s “Fake Coin”, Natalia in Dostoevsky’s “The Humiliated and Injured”, Amalia in Shiller’s “Robbers”, Regina in Ibsen’s “Ghosts”. One of the memorable roles of A. Evdokimova was the role of Prostakova in Fonvizin’s “Unicorn”.
After a long break, the movie is back. The actress played the role of Luba Dirental in the film “Crash”. Decisive, as then dreamed, the film in her fate was not, but opened a new way to cinema.
Often on the screen she was offered to embody images of women obstinate, willful, contentious, somehow deprived of life.
The most memorable of them is a selfish, struggling in all ways for her own well-being, Martha (“Wormwood is bitter grass”), devoid of firm moral principles, going to the crime of Glafir (“Cry of Silence”), wounding a loved one with her misunderstanding, lack of heartfelt sensitivity of Tatiana (“Sold on, extended, charm...”). These roles required the actress the ability to describe the character with energetic, convex strokes.
Quite different colors were used by the performer, playing the roles of mothers in the films “Tender age”, “For a clear advantage”, “Courier”. In these images it was necessary to emphasize the heart, and the ability to compassion, and self-esteem.
There was a lot of creative experience. The need for interesting work, unusual artistic tasks led the actress to the theater-studio “Sphere”, where she became one of the leading performers. She played the main role in the play by N. Pogodin “Mole”, little known to the audience, read a series of poems by Anna Akhmatova in the production “Nesterday Evening”. She also experimented in film, collaborating with young directors. In the thesis of the student of VGIK A. Salbiyev according to the story of Vasily Shukshin, “Obduction” played a saleswoman, in the tape of the Czechoslovak student M. Faltyn, “Middle Vashtar” performed the role of a fairy-tale heroine, a good fairy, and in the short film “The Ninth of May” – the directorial debut of the famous actor A. Porokhovshchikov – she appeared before the audience a philistine. These works once again prove the breadth of the range of an interesting actress who loves to take risks.
